A proposal to move a portion of the air traffic control duties from Akron-Canton Airport to Cleveland has controllers and pilots concerned.

The union representing the air traffic controllers held a news conference Tuesday night to discuss what they said were the ramifications of the proposal to close the radar control operation at Akron-Canton Airport and move it to Cleveland.

The Federal Aviation Administration has proposed consolidating the duties of what’s called Terminal Radar Approach Control (TRACON) facilities from several Ohio airports — Akron-Canton, Toledo, Mansfield and Youngstown — into one new location, at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. The proposal being considered by the FAA would create the new TRACON by 2014 or 2015.

The original plan was to have the new center open by 2013, FAA spokeswoman Elizabeth Isham Cory said, but the proposal has been pushed back and is still in the early stages.

The TRACON controllers use radar displays and radios to guide planes approaching and departing airports within a 35- to 40-mile radius from an airport. Planes that are at high altitudes in flight are controlled by Air Traffic Control
Centers — the closest one to Akron is in Oberlin, which controls traffic in six states.

At Akron-Canton Airport, there are also tower cab controllers that control aircraft within five miles of the airport.

National Air Traffic Controllers Association spokeswoman Alex Caldwell said the union is not against consolidating TRACONs and understands others have worked and created efficiencies. She said the union is concerned that the FAA has kept the plan for the Ohio consolidation a secret and has not asked for input from pilots and controllers.

”Let’s make a better, safer, more efficient product, but do it with the people who use that product,” said Caldwell, who came to Akron from Washington, D.C., Link Building Services for Tuesday’s meeting.
